Artist Statement

In art my greatest strength is my creativity. I have always loved art since the time I was able to open my eyes and take everything in. When I started taking art classes, I was determined to make everything the exact same way it looked. All my drawings had to be “realistic”. It took me a long time to realize that I can look at an object and see something different from someone else. Once I discovered this, I was able to let go and explore. Every time I create a piece it is completely unique from anything else.
My greatest weakness is replicating people. I have always had trouble drawing them. If I get the proportions correct, then the details and values are missing. If I have good details, then the body and face proportions are off. Sometimes, it is even hard to tell that it is supposed to be a person. I worked a lot last year on my people drawing skills and I did improve immensely when it was just drawing or charcoal, but when we started to paint, it was as if I was never taught anything.
It would be my goal to be able to draw a person well, but I do not enjoy drawing people and it is not a skill that I really want. My main goal is to work faster and harder to be more efficient with my work. I most often like the outcome of my work when I have put the most time into the piece. I do not have unlimited time though, so I would like to be able to do just as good of a job or better in less time.

What holds me back the most in art is time and money. Art does not have to be expensive, but I like having options. I like having access to different media and different resources. I have a busy schedule inside and outside of school every single day of the week including weekends. I have little to no alone time and down time and when I do, I usually use it to try and catch up with sleep so I do not get sick. If I had more time I would be able to work a lot more on my skills.
